How photographers actually use a shot list

Send it two weeks before the wedding

What is a wedding shot list and do I really need one?
A wedding shot list is a written checklist of every photo you want from the day — getting ready, ceremony, family combinations, reception. Most photographers ask for one because the family-formals portion in particular is impossible to remember on the day. Without it, you almost always discover later that a photo of you with a specific aunt or grandparent was missed.
How does the family combination builder work?
Type the names of each side's parents, siblings, and grandparents into the form. The generator expands those names into the standard combinations a photographer needs — couple with each parent individually, couple with each whole side of the family, the couple with both sets of parents, and so on. You can then check off, edit, or remove any shot.
How long should the family-formals session take?
Plan around 30–45 minutes for family formals if you have a typical guest list. Each combination takes 1–2 minutes once everyone is gathered, and gathering people is the slow part. Keep the list under 25 combinations if you can, and have a friend or coordinator call out names so the photographer can keep shooting.
Should I send the shot list to my photographer?
Yes — share it at least two weeks before the wedding. A good photographer will already plan most of the standard shots, but the family combinations are personal and they cannot guess them. Email or share the printable version directly with the photographer and your day-of coordinator.
Can I export or print the shot list?
